My God! We Should be ashamed!!!
By Wendy Mundy of Blues My GreenSpiderWeb
Toxic Soup of Plastic Debris, Twice the Size of US, Forms in the Pacific Ocean! Read more at:http://www.latimes.com/news/local/oceans/la-me-cean2aug02,0,3130914.story "All attitude, the chick straightened up and clacked its beak at a visitor, then rocked back and dangled webbed feet in the air to cool them in the afternoon breeze. The next afternoon, the chick ignored passersby. The bird was flopped on its belly, its legs splayed awkwardly. Its wings drooped in the hot sun. A few hours later, the chick was dead. John Klavitter, a wildlife biologist, turned the bird over and cut it open with a knife. Probing its innards with a gloved hand, he pulled out a yellowish sac — its stomach. Out tumbled a collection of red, blue and orange bottle caps, a black spray nozzle, part of a green comb, a white golf tee and a clump of tiny dark squid beaks ensnared in a tangle of fishing line". By Kenneth R. Weiss, Times Staff Writer August 2, 2006 That was 2006, has anything changed? Yes the amount of trash has grown. How big?? 100 million tons of plastic can be found in the Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch! and that's just one patch. It is believed to be 10 times the size of Quebec (1,365,128 km2 land mass of Quebec) It's really hard to even imagine how big that is, but I get he felling that if it was on land we would have a fit. So why do so many people not know about it? Because it's not in our backyard but it's still are fault and we must do something to stop it from growing. There are many articles written on the subject and so I won't get to in-depth, but I do urge you to look at your plastics and really think about where they end up. Yes we recycle and think we are doing good but what about that wrapper in the ditch or plastic grocery bag that flies out of your hand? It all ends up in the Ocean. Every time it rains the trash is flushed into the storm drains and most cities and towns do not have the systems or grates to catch it so it flows out into the rivers and so it goes. 80% of the floating trash comes from us and we can do something about that, make sure to securely tie garbage bags so the wind do not spread the garbage - pick up trash even if it isn't yours - use as little plastic as possible - help clean up you local beaches, and pressure the government. Think about this an estimated 100,000 marine animals die each year from eating or getting entangled in the debris and it's our fault.
