Garden Clubs are going green choice
By Wendy Mundy
Garden Clubs are going green choice! We all know going green is big business and a growing concern. There are alot of things we can do to help our Towns be greener and save money as well. Not all things green are fun though a lot of them do require a bit of work and effort like, composting and Recycling. They are two great ways to reduce your impact on the planet and it also cuts down on garbage removal costs. Using captured water from either rain of sump pump water to water lawns and gardens can really take a strain of the public water system. Turning off out-door lighting and replacing the bulbs with low E not only will save money but also cuts down on light pollution so everyone can enjoy looking at the stars. One needs to have fun though, and I have found a great way for you to do just that. Gardening is a great past time and it does not matter if you only have a porch or gallery. If you have every wanted to start gardening contacting or joining your local Gardening Club would be a great place to start. Most have meetings with experts and 'How To' classes. Plus it's a great way to meet new people. Our local Hudson Garden Club is very involved with it's community, with over 250 members. There are many special activities year round, a little something for everyone both young and old. From their annual Flower Shows, Garden Tours , and other events they raise money for grants and scholarships. Since 2000 the Hudson Garden Club has offered grants to fund worthwhile projects or programs that fulfil the mission of the Club. These grants help to plant trees and restore wet lands and trails locally. Help through Scholarships for Student with a green thumb can also receive help. This financial aid program was created by the Hudson Garden Club for the student who plans to study horticulture or related subjects in the environmental sciences at a recognized centre, school or college. My favourite is the the Christmas wreath making work-shop. Every one gets together to make lovely wreaths from fresh cut boughs. Beginners can get help and tips on technique and ideas on how to decorate it. Lively conversation and a cup of tea of coffee please a great wreath to take home are a lovely way to get into the Christmas spirit. Well I hope you check out your local garden club and see what they are up to.
