Fireflies, don't forget to unplug them
By Wendy Mundy
Well Spring is just around the corner (she says hopefully) and I started to think about the great outdoors and what to do this year in my garden. I try to add something each year whether it be a few new plants or some other decoration like solar lights to add a bit of sparkle to our outdoor living space. So while scaning around the net to locate just the right thing I can across Firefly Lights......I had to take a second look and sure enough they are fake fireflies! A California company called Firefly Magic has introduced Firefly Lights that let you make it look like you have the real thing darting about in their bushes, trees and back yard. Thier new product will "bring back childhood memories for many grownups" and allow the millions of children who "live in the western United States and have never seen a real firefly or lightning bug" to experience the magic of "one of nature's greatest wonders." They are so convincing that university field researchers have used the product to attract real fireflies, which is great to study them and to learn more about their habitat. I grew up on a farm and remember many warm summer night when I went out to catch the little guys and marvel at them, I have two kids and they too have enjoyed the wonder of these little light bugs, though I to have noticed that the night is dimmer these days as fewer of them are to be seen. But the thought of having fake fireflies leave a funny taste in my mouth. How sad to think that people have to use artificial things to replace what nature has to offer. There are lot less Fireflies around in the wild and why is that? US! What can we do about it..I don't know really, but I'm pretty sure that making greener choices and being active in protecting our enviroment is the best way to help. I'm not the only one who finds fake Fireflies a little disturbing? What's next I wonder? Robotic Penguins? Fake northern lights? Hologram tree frogs? I always thought that fireflies where very cool and that they were a natural wonder. True that one rarely sees a firefly in the big cities, and that they are not seen in certain parts of the world, nor have they ever been there but to replace them with on-demand light shows is calious to say the least. I think I look for a few Humming bird feeders instead.
